Phone Stolen in Rio?
It happens. Motorbike phone snatching is the most common tourist-targeted crime in Rio's South Zone. Here is the exact recovery sequence, based on six years of helping BBE travelers through it. Take a breath. We've got your back.
First 24 Hours
What to do, in order
Do not chase
The phone is gone. Chasing a motorbike is dangerous and almost never works. Your safety matters more than the device.
If you are with BBE: message your Experience Concierge on WhatsApp immediately. We will start the recovery protocol and meet you at a safe location.
Remote lock and wipe
From any other device or computer, do this immediately. The faster you act, the less they can access.
- iPhone: icloud.com/find → Mark as Lost → Erase iPhone
- Android: android.com/find → Secure device → Erase device
- Change your email password from a computer
- Log out of all WhatsApp Web sessions
Call your bank and cards
If your banking apps were open or saved, treat this as a financial breach. Call your bank's international number and freeze any cards linked to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or banking apps on that phone.
PIX users: If you had Brazilian banking apps with PIX enabled, call your Brazilian bank and request a temporary PIX block. Set new PIX limits when you replace the phone.
File a police report (boletim de ocorrencia)
You need this for insurance. Tourist Police (DEATUR) in Centro handles English-language reports for visitors.

- Bring passport copy, hotel address, and approximate time/location
- The report is free and takes 15 to 30 minutes

Contact your insurance
Most travel insurance covers stolen phones. You will need:
- The police report (boletim de ocorrencia)
- Proof of purchase or IMEI number
- Incident details (time, location, description)
File the claim as soon as you have the police report. Processing typically takes 5 to 10 business days.
Get a replacement phone
Rio has Apple Stores and authorized retailers. For a quick fix, buy a basic Android for WhatsApp and maps.
- Apple: VillageMall in Barra or RioSul Center in Botafogo
- Budget option: any carrier store (Vivo, Claro, TIM) sells cheap Androids with prepaid SIM

How to prevent it next time
Keep it in your pocket
The #1 cause of phone theft in Rio is a phone held visibly while walking. Keep it in your pocket or bag on the street. Step into a doorway or shop if you need to check it.
Use earbuds for navigation
Holding your phone out for maps is a signal to thieves. Use audio navigation with earbuds instead. If you must look at the screen, stand with your back to a wall.
Carry a backup phone
A cheap secondary phone for WhatsApp and maps keeps you connected even if your main phone is taken. BBE travelers: ask us about this before your trip.
Do not leave it on the beach
Never leave your phone on a towel while you swim. Either leave it at the hotel or have someone watch it. Beach theft (arrastao) is real and fast.
