At midnight, people walk to the water's edge and jump seven waves, one wish for each. Many bring white flowers and small offerings and set them on the sea for Iemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the ocean and mother of the waters, asking her blessing for the year. It is a Black-rooted tradition that has become the soul of the whole night.

At the stroke of midnight, barges anchored offshore light up the sky over the Atlantic. The fireworks come up out of the sea itself, the whole beach roars, strangers hug strangers, and for fifteen minutes the ocean and the sky are the same color. This is the photo. This is the feeling. Then the music plays until sunrise.
