At midnight, people walk to the water's edge and jump seven waves, one wish for each. Many bring white flowers and small offerings and set them on the sea for Iemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the ocean and mother of the waters, asking her blessing for the year. It is a Black-rooted tradition that has become the soul of the whole night.

At the stroke of midnight, barges anchored offshore light up the sky over the Atlantic. The fireworks rise out of the sea, the whole beach erupts, and the music keeps going until sunrise.
